as mentioned yesterday, it has exactly been a year. and it has been more than half a decade since karMa kolektib's birth, and light, or dark rays, or whatever seems to be shining recently (after the cut is the poster with the details for their crash course on character design that shall be held at UPLB come september 10, with prof. emmanuel dumlao in the morning and resident karMa members in the afternoon; poster design by jesapearl tamayo; layout by jobaliw yang). glad to exchange messages with the old ones. and, it has been months since i have tried weaving an image. i have been asked to draw for a publication. a sort of pressure that, well, causes pleasure on my end. whatever that means. but, really, being productive makes one feel, i don't know, nice. so, here, i present

a feeling of being created (and maybe, of being a creator? i don't know). there. after william blake's "Book of Urizen - the creation of Urizen in material form by Los," way back 1794. that is all. i thank you. glad to "translate" an image this time.

Would print the first 15 or 20 copies later. I might drop by the NCAS Auditorium for Isko't Iska 2011. I only expect a certain number of friends to be interested, so just contact me if you want a copy. Or, leave a comment here, with your contact details. Or, "like" the page, then let's communicate from there. Or, wait for the next komikon, though I am not quite sure whether I'll be there or not. Distribution is quite a problem. Left copies of Lihim ng mga Lespu at Crazy Carabao's along Demarces, but some ended up stolen--as even some of the second-hand books they sell ended up stolen. At least, people are still interested in zines and books.

Anyway, let me share blurbs for Ang Sandatahang Banga. This is from Professor Emmanuel Dumlao of the Department of Humanities of the College of Arts and Sciences of UPLB:

"Windang pa tayo at naghihimutok tungkol sa mga bangang nagsusulputan sa kampus, pinagbabasag na ni Tilde ang mga ito. Sa “Ang Sandatahang Banga, o Kung Bakit Maraming Banga sa Elbi”, dinestrungka ni Tilde ang isang misteryo: ang mga banga, ang CSB, ang large class, ang OSA, at ang iba pang instrumento ng panunupil sa UPLB ay mga pintig ng iisang puso.

Walang gatol sa obrang ito ang kaisahan ng magkakasalungat: sinauna at haytek, realidad at kababalaghan, ordinaryo at pantastiko, tula at prosa. Sa pamamagitan nito, pinalulutang tayo ni Tilde sa daigdig ng mga rakstar na khalix habang pinananatili rin niya tayong nakatuntong sa ating realidad.

Naiibang mukha ito ng pagkathang nakikisangkot sa transformasyong panlipunan. Iginuguhit nito ang isang bagong tradisyon ng paglikha ng panitikan. Mabuhay ka Tilde!"

This is from Adam David, author of The El Bimbo Variations and The Long Weekend:

"Sa kasalukuyang panahon, mag-isang pinangangatawanan ni Acuña ang potensyal ng modernong komix bilang anyong pandiskursong pulitikal, mula sa tindig at indayog ng palaban na panulat hanggang sa nakakapulikat na kapraningan ng 'di-makalma-kalmang guhit-kamay hanggang sa paggamit ng mga veriteng litratong tila halaw sa pahayagan o libro ng kasaysayan. Ang sinasabi ni Acuña ay Ito ang tunay na lagay ng buhay: walang mga bayani; marami ang halimaw; ang sarili lang ang mapagkakatiwalaan; ang maaasahan lang ay patuloy na opresyon at kamatayan. Marami pang kailangang matutunan. Buksan ang mga mata at silipin ang halimaw sa loob ng banga."

I think there are still a few copies of the other titles, and as far as I can remember they are sold at around the same price. Lihim ng mga Lespu @35php. Ang Engkwentro sa Palma Bridge ng mga Batang Pinalaya(s) sa Sinapupunan @35. Panayam Kay Io (O Kung Bakit Gumagalaw ang mga Estatwa sa Elbi) @40php. There may be special arrangements for bulk orders, or if you were to buy at least three titles. And, if I'd have the powers to produce stickers, you may show me your copy of any komix titles and I'd give you one, for free. Ang punk naman kasi ng ganto, lagalag-benta-bigay-etc. Not that I'm complaining. Just saying. :L

It has been a while since I have released a komix title. I think, it shall be the time for releasing another illustrated narrative. But this time, I would have to produce less copies, say, 10 or 15, and just wait for pre-orders to print more. I am still as jobless as I was way back when the very essential (eh?) Panayam Kay Io and the Aborted Ones (with a new cover!) were released. Twas half a year ago, if memory serves me right. Anyway, here is the study of the cover. I hope whoever this shameless plug reaches would be interested with--

There. Rough translation of the title may go like, "Armed Forces of the Potheads, or What the fuck are with those pots plaguing the UPLB campus?!" I just hope that this is the last komix I'd do for Maria Makiling and her constituents. Her spell's too strong. No matter how bitter I feel towards Elbi, here I am cramming this komix. Target release date: late August. Still looking for UPLB-based collaborators, ie, photographers and/or graphic artists. I am, however, determined to finish this title whether there would responses to this call for help.

Eliphas With a Thousand Young

I am not quite sure how to categorize this. Shall I put it under the "Pandora's Boxes," since there is a reminiscence of the past (or one of the futures?!) going on? Or, under the "Nausea" series, since, well, I don't have to explain, right? Those are tongues and mouths and teeth and appendages right there. Or, under the "Spectacles," since-- or under a new category, say, "Tentacles," with another unclassified illustration--King Inang Yellow? Ugh. Nevermind. Just, let me share with you, Eliphas with A Thousand Young. Obviously a reference to Shub-Niggurath.

It has been a hundred posts ago since I started this this whatever this is I am doing, screaming things across the cyberspace that may or may not matter to strangers or non-strangers. Skeptic ones who care enough to count the entries herein may notice that the number of posts does not amount to a hundred. That is so because I have imported posts from an old blog and 'unpublished' them or saved them as drafts, thus the count, at least in my dashboard, says 100. So, let me, well, celebrate and contribute to the interwebz noise pollution via this post. This shall be a lengthy entry, but it seems like I will have to update this later. *update!* This post shall now be about four things: i.) The Under the Storm Antho; ii.) The Sakbayan anniv; iii) The 100 days of komix meme--do not proceed if you want to wait for the rest of the month before reading the rest of KarMa Kolektib-related trivia; and iv.) Something I am looking forward to.

The Under the Storm Anthology of Contemporary Philippine poetry already listed 150 poets a while ago. However, the post seems unavailable at the moment, so, you may view the initial first, second and third sets here. I will be updating this post as soon as I see the list. I was quite overwhelmed upon reading it hours ago since there are, indeed, a lot of contemporaries, iyas co-fellows, elbi friends, other poet friends and, well, literary figures that already, say, made their respective marks in the local and even international literary scenes. *update!* I've read in the comments section of .MOV's page that the anthology will be in a book format. Today, we also celebrate the 15th anniversary of Samahan ng Kabataan para sa Bayan--the widest party-alliance of student organizations, the one with the most membership in the University of the Philippines system. The 100 days of komiks awareness campaign also begins today [details here]. For this month, participants are to post anything--from status messages, links, images, to whatsoever--about their own titles. I would want to post KarMa Kolektib history in the next 30 days. I'll post my list here, for the same reason that I posted the 30day shit music shit challenge shit--for something that is more irrelevant to your life than most posts in this site are, ie, for reminding my self. Anyway, I'll update this from time to time and copypaste whatever is in here to that social networking site, for the sake of tagging and, well, networking. Let this be a personal journey into the komix ...plane. Eh?

001: Kartunista-Manunulat Kolektib (KarMa Kolektib) is the first komix group in UPLB as far as I can remember since there was none of such sort back when I was, well, younger.

002: KarMa Kolektib was founded on December 10, 2006--the same date of the 58th Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day.

003: KarMa Kolektib traces its roots to UPLB Ibarang, a socio-cultural organization of students delving into all art forms--from the visual arts, the literary arts, music, dance, and theater arts.

004: Though KarMa Kolektib limited its scope to the visual and the literary, it has been active as a performance art group lately--mashing up poetry, music, visual arts and sometimes theatrical hysteria, in a performance.

005: KarMa Kolektib staged shadowplays inside and outside the academe, in closed spaces and streets, anywhere as long as there's an OHP projector.

006: The first komix KarMa Kolektib released were those wall komix that comment on socio-political issues. Or as they call them "Komiks Sa Pader" (KSP). KSPs are posted on bulletin boards within the UPLB campus. And, are supposed to be uploaded in virtual Walls.

007: The first wall komix title was "Obobngata," a portmanteau of the names of the supposed characters, Oblette, Oblese, Mariang Banga and Rosetta. It plagued the bulletin boards on 2006.

008: The first zine-type released has a Tom Wolfe-ish title. "Obobngata: Ang mga Batang Pinalaya(s) sa Sinapupunan I: Oblette: Ang Engkwentro sa Palma Bridge." Or, roughly, "The Aborted Kids and their Fun," which is inconsistent with this post.

009: Most outputs of KarMa Kolektib in recent had something to do with my academic requirements. I remember, btw, submitting "the Aborted Kids and their Fun" zine in a class that only requires a short story. How careerist, though such deviance may also cause me trouble. Fortunately, it did not.

010: Even my creative output (the thesis equivalent in our course) was initially driven by komix--by "Obobngata" in particular. Would talk more about this next time.

011: "Little Judith and the Dolls of Gloomshade" was the first komix, wall komix, in english released by KarMa Kolektib. Mandy of the cartoon "Grim and Evil" inspired the birth of Judith--name is a reference to a song of A Perfect Circle about MJK's mom.

012: The first issue KarMa Kolektib vehemently commented on was the Large Lecture Class Policy that was proposed in 2007, or was that 2006? In a nutshell, the policy increases the class size from 30 to about 250 as a crosscutting measure despite the 300% tuition increase.

013: "Microeigengrau" was the wall komix, I think, that came next after "Judith." The characters Orestes and Eliphas the goat are commenting about military surveillance and all that shit that happens within the campus premises.

014: After "the Aborted Kids," KarMa Kolektib released the illustrated narrative "Lihim ng mga Lespu." It is about the LAKBAYAN (the long march of the basic sectors from Southern Tagalog to Mendiola) experience of a photographer friend of an activist.

015: KarMa Kolektib contributed to "Agunyas," a literary folio of UPLB Writers' Club. (This was during the vandalized NPC mural, I think.)

016: KarMa Kolektib participated in two Opus Elbi art exhibits spearheaded by UP Painters' Club--including the one that celebrates UPLB's centennial.

017: KarMa Kolektib has been consistently participating in Factsheet art exhibits that comment on the human rights situation of the country. These exhibits are spearheaded by Artists' Arrest.

018: KarMa Kolektib conducts workshops on komix and other related matters. The first was the campus-based workshop, "Mga Kwentong Out-of-the-Box na deKahon." KarMA, in partnership with different organizations, has been active in regional workshops as well.

019: KarMa Kolektib has also contributed to Kilometre64 Poetry Collective's projects.

020: KarMa Kolektib released a 2011 calendar x portable gallery last year. The calendar featuring members' artworks is a resolute stance against the Large Lecture Class Policy.

021: The Karmalendaryo 2011 was launched with "Panayam Kay Io," the zine that concluded the unconcluded 2006 "Obobngata." Vicarious in "Obobngata" was renamed as Io in the new version. "Panayam Kay Io" investigates the reason behind the motion of statues as seen by elbi constituents.

022: KarMA Kolektib is exploring the fliptop ...thing lately (Hey, correct me if I am wrong, resident members!) and sticker bombing the UPLB campus with a new ...trip called "Verso Libre."

023: KarMa Kolektib has also been doing live art (eh? hehe) in the corridors and the streets and the building within UPLB, painting murals, spreading awareness about campus and local issues and all that shit. The public exhibition is called Eksena sa Madla.

024: KarMa Kolektib has participated in Comics Conventions.

025: There are, I believe, KarMa Komiks in Crazy Carabao, Demarces / Santa Fe, Los Banos Laguna. I am not quite sure whether there are copies of Lihim ng mga Lespu at Sputnik, in Cubao. You may approach any group member for er.. orders.

026: A group of students awarded and recognized KarMa Kolektib and ..er a member of the group as an ARThrob. Awkward, but fine. :L

030: Lastly, my undergrad creative output (as mentioned, the thesis equivalent in our degree course), "February Fair ng Dis Pater (Isang Proyekto sa Pagtitimpla ng Proscript)" is a metafiction inspired by the Arkham Asylum script of Grant Morrison for Dave McKean. I am considering revising and I might need help with the art part. If you are interested, you may ask me and I'll send the .pdf / manuscript via email. Overall feel of the post-apoc UPLB setting is biomechanical, btw. (I hope this fits as statmessage. If not, then a note will do.)

Or, at least keep the 'motherfuckers' away from my other self. Moral burdens and credibility dilemmas suck. Wouldn't elaborate further. I hope nothing more complicated than this comes up. Though I know and I feel the vibes of an impending motherfucker that clears the way and wants to rape me with all its glory, despite my not being a mother. *sigh* motherfuckers. I feel high. Seriously. I want to start working. I am looking forward, manic monday. Let's see how we hit each other hard with crowbars of criticism. Oh, consider this post fiction, by the way. Spiritual growth. Elemental maturity. Whatever those meant. And, no, I am not romanticizing or building up a facade of a me as someone passionate enough to starve as, say, an artist or something else. I fucked off a job, after taking the salary and the effort I expect to exert into consideration. And. To put it bluntly, I hate that place until now. Felt abused and harassed and ugh. Stop. Stopped. Back to what I shall be doing. Drive the spirits of mainstream gods away. Conquer the night. I have to stop this blabber. And. Focus. Now.

Pandora's Boxes [ii]: 8 Demons

Oh, a new header / banner / whatsoever. Joy.

Though we all know that the evils of this millennium culminates with the most relevant issue of these times, i.e. the Onion not getting a Pulitzer Prize despite its outstanding contribution to the world with its high-caliber journalism powered with dedicated journalists who want nothing but to bring you the facts even without an award and desperately mad loyal supporters who would do anything for truth and justice, there are other issues that deserve attention (though let me emphasize, again, and clarify, again, that the Onion deserves more than all attention it can get such as the Pulitzer Prize, goddamnit!). And this concerns your children and the future of your grandchildren. And their grandchildren's clones.

Demons lurk amongst us, and one of them celebrated a birthday back then when they were exposed by Saviours and Soldiers of God and God's Truth (SAGOT) to the public. How arrogant those demons are! No demon has the right to celebrate birthdays or proclaim the day of their birth, for chrissakes! About two years passed and recently, another among their ranks celebrated his birthday through an esoteric occult ritual that the public would never suspect of being a satanic rite--dancing a new world order dance in the rain while screaming unholy incantations to wash their sins away and save themselves--without a christ! How proud and Luciferian!

This rite occurred after this guy and six of his cohorts (so, they were seven! see how they blaspheme God? they even used God's number instead of the Devil's number, six, and imprison themselves to manipulate media attention!) were freed by their co-demons from the Hell where God placed them to atone for their sins. The unrepentant sinners even marched from Hell to earth proclaiming victory over God and his warriors of righteousness. The same unrepentant sinners were asked by the soldiers about other demons they knew since knowing a demon's name gives you a decent chance of capturing them. Surprisingly, the list of demons names demons that were already labelled demons by SAGOT back then. The bane of humanity, i.e. these demons--the seven, the eight, the sixteen, the fifty four, the one hundred, whatever the number and to whatever Legion they serve--shall turn to God and righteousness as long as they still have their souls to surrender to the Almighty. Get the Onion a Pulitzer to have an in-depth reportage further fortified by thorough analysis of issues such as these and secure the future of your children. And their grandchildren. And their grandchildren's clones. Before it is too late and we end in either a zombie or a robot apocalypse.

Pandora's Boxes [i]: Jumpstarting Nostalgia

Had I really learnt how, I hope I could re-learn vector imaging, or whatever it is called. Today I begin another thing among other things I have began (and oftentimes failed to sustain, but it's fine!): unearthing files and attempting to say something about it. This was created way back 2006.

I have this obsession with unborn motherfuckers and I have no idea what that might mean or might say about me and my subconscious. These weird images or visions or whatever you want to call them eventually became my first er... illustrated narrrative--"Ang Engkwentro sa Palma Bridge ng mga Batang Pinalaya(s) sa Sinapupunan," or, roughly, "The Fun of the Aborted Kids." :L This was originally submitted as a class requirement, just like "Lihim ng mga Lespu." Here's an "old" news. Anyway, since I've began showing a pair, here's another pair--the two covers of my first er... zine. This zine was released 2007. The reprint last year, 2010.

The next installment or sequel or prequel since time does not matter would soon be released by KarMa Kolektib (After four years? :L Haha, tagged you bilang pressure, ha, ka-collab. Joke. Pero, take your time. Haha.). Like the fanpage here.

UPLB Perspective Nostalgia

I think it has almost been a year since the release of the first and only regular issue of UPLB Perspective SY 2009-10. Student funds were not collected, paralyzing the publication but never its dissent against repressive administration policies. I'd keep this entry short--still had things to do. A lot. Sigh. Anyway. Factsheet 43 and Sigwa @ UPLB

The Factsheet 43 art exhibit, for the benefit of the Morong 43 healthworkers would be showcased at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, in One Caldi Place on September 13 2010. While on September 21, there would be a film showing of “SIGWA” (Rage…of Perils and Hopes), a film by Joel Lamangan and written by Boni Ilagan--an "Official entry to the Cinemalaya 2010, a Top Grosser of the Cinemalaya 2010, a film Graded “A” by Cinema Evaluation Board-MTRCB." Art imitates life, particularly that of the illegally arrested health workers, in Fact Sheet 43: 43 Artists for the 43 Health Workers. Fact Sheet derives its title from the document prepared by paralegal and human rights volunteers in relation to reported cases of human right violations. The exhibit reflects the artist's interpretation of what is contained in the real fact sheets, which are otherwise unaccounted or discounted by state forces.

For two consecutive years, Fact Sheet has regularly been exhibited every December in time for the commemoration ofthe International Human Rights month. However in 2010, the group saw the urgency to mount the exhibit early in the year following the illegal and arbitrary arrest of 43 health workers, composed of professional and volunteer doctors, nurses and paramedics, in the middle of their health training in Morong, Rizal. Collectively known as 'Morong 43', the health workers were arrested allegedly for their affiliation with progressive groups. Based on the victims' accounts,they were subjected to various type of mental and physical torture in the hands of the military while in Camp Capinpin.

Despite growing clamor by the local and international communities to release the health workers, the 43 remained incarcerated and are facing non-bailable and dubious case of illegal possession of explosives. In particular, the artists, together with the family of the health workers appeal to the new administration to immediately release the 43and litigate those responsible for the violations against them.

Fact Sheet 43, which has already been exhibited invarious galleries and public areas in Manila, will attempt to sow creative and emotional revelation about the human rights situation in the country through visual arts.

Martial Law has ended almost three decades ago but gross human rights violations have persisted to this day. In fact, violations of civil and political rights have even worsened now than the Martial Law era.

The human rights group KARAPATAN has accounted more than 1,000 victims of extrajudicial killings, 207 victims of enforced disappearances, and 217 political detainees during the nine-year regime of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Alongside these direct assaults are growing cases of torture, hamletting, and violence against women and children among many other forms of human rights atrocities. Many of the victims are members and leaders of progressive and militant organizations, which are critical to the Arroyoregime. Even artists and filmmakers were not spared from this.

This pattern of impunity against progressive groups has extended to the new regime,wherein a total of 6 victims of extra-judicial killings have been accounted in less than a month under President Noynoy Aquino.

In light with the commemoration of Martial Law this September, various groups and cultural workers will have the nationwide screening of 'Sigwa', a Cinemalaya 2010 film directed by Joel Lamangan; written by Bonifacio Ilagan; and starred by Dawn Zulueta, Zsa Zsa Padilla, and Tirso Cruz III among others. In theSouthern Tagalog region, the 'Sigwa' screening is slated on September 21 at theNCAS Auditorium, UP Los Banos; a forum-discussion will follow shortly after the screening. Sigwa hopes to educate students on the human rights situation,especially during Martial Law.

As a regional event, the proponents are sounding the call to all institutions, organizations, and schools in the region to support the activity by attending and publicizing the film screening. As a pioneering activity, this is an open and continuing call to all youth, filmmakers, and members in the academe to defend and uphold human rights. Recognizing the power and reach of films, weare optimistic that in one-way or another, we can sow resistance among the public against attempts to curtail their human rights.
