Gallus Ignis, Angelus Novus, Lateralux

This is an updated, extended, and more, say, indulgent version (with shameful-shameless plugs as parenthetical remarks) of my year-ender column article for Materials, for Preposterity published last 28 December 2017. More details about some sort of milestones, with hyperlinks. -TA

The series of “previews” (part translation, part summary, part review as noted in the last three column articles) shall end with Bomen Guillermo’s “Kawayan” (2007/2017) and Emiliana Kampilan’s Dead Balagtas: Mga Sayaw ng Lupa at Dagat (2017). Incidentally, the first two previews were fueled by fire and air: text’s terrorism and author’s sentimentalism, flickers that can either be blown by the wind into puffs of smoke blending with the atmosphere or into flames of arson causing alarm; while the last two were weaved by earth and water: peasants’ komiks and scholars’ scripts.
Before putting my feet back on earth allow me to hover a bit. Pardon my indulgence, as the next paragraphs serve as my brief entry to the infamous essay-writing contest that shall crowd newsfeeds come the end of the year of the fire rooster:

"splitting the atom" ++

from the college of fine arts, the CONDEMNED exhibit is now at hardin ng mga diwata of the college of arts and letters. if things go well, a print edition of our komix "Die Philosophen" (a slightly different version from the one that appeared in highchair 18: poetry comics issue) shall be available at BLTX VI (makiki-squat ata ako sa may bandang Cabinet). following* "Nang Mag-agaw-dilim ang mga Kabataang Mangangaso sa Majayjay" of Factsheet 6, is my contribution to Fact Sheet 7 / Down the Drain: The Wasted State of Human Rights under the Aquino Regime, "Splitting the Atom," which is about the illegal detention case of physicist, environmentalist, activist, professor Kim Gargar:

let us brace ourselves for Hagupit and bear with the crap that is the Aquino regime, so we have enough strength for vigilance and for mass action. taas kamaong solidarity sa panawagan para sa climate justice at para sa karapatang pantao!

setyembre at ilang katapusan

graduate colloquium weekend, erasure presentation

as mentioned [earlier], i discuss [Nihil Vers: ode to deCo] this coming weekend, sept 20, at the cal graduate colloquium. book of abstracts with programme schedule, [downloadable]. after the *** is the abstract with the necessary hyperlinks (the abstract is included in the linked pdf file, pero, of course, no links sa stuff). also, an announcement: five three copies of nihil vers left, for those who reserved a copy, please drop me an email, an sms, a pm, or communicate in whatever manner, if you are still interested, so i keep a copy for you. i might print another batch, emphasis on *might*, but the next batch of copies might be cheaper and, what, uglier, than the first edition. kidding aside, i am uncertain whether i'll print another batch because the prints are limited: 40 copies, 20 different prints, only 2 copies per print. and i have to fund other projects and, again, produce limited copies, so i that they're out there, for whatever purpose they may serve. also, i *might* bring a print of the set of the recent Kritika Kultura collab, but i won't sell it, i'll just show it for the benefit of those who haven't seen it yet, since, as of the moment, the kk site is having some sorta problem. so, please drop by and try to [pre-register], kasi limited ata ang lunch or something. thank you. see you.

Omitted Texts, Overwritten Codes and E-rased Works: A Cutback
by Tilde Acuña

Three years may be too short a time since my first venture into erasure, but I think it merits introspection as much has changed in my manner of engagement. In 2011, “eraserase002” was published in Under the Storm: Anthology of Contemporary Philippine Poetry. Admittedly, I responded to the call for submissions with drafts that I consider in-progress, since editors Khavn dela Cruz and Joel Toledo say they look for “wasak” poems.
In 2012, a set with the aforementioned work came out in the erasures anthology but the words get in the way, assembled by Adam David. I thought I made a naïve mistake by erasing Brecht, but on hindsight, I re-think and re-consider that the project somewhat puts into practice his verfremdungseffekt. Only, it does not and I am making excuses for youthful forays I enjoyed.
Kritika Kultura No. 23 includes “Madrid 1884” and “Tondo 1892,” collaborative works with Dennis Aguinaldo. Preceding the aforesaid sets are entries in a picture dictionary, a larger work-in-progress with Aguinaldo: “bookworm two,” “flog two” and “workhorse two,” published in the online journal transit. The “eraserase” set and these recent works differ in execution, as the latter makes use of webpages as source text and of digitally rendered drawings as liquid paper (whiteout) or pentel pen (black out).
Finally, a project—building on insights from previous ones—attempts to enact violence on something I deem violent. In Nihil Vers: ode to deCo, I censor a document that aims to censor expression and suppress basic rights, in the fashion of industrial band Laibach's strategy that Zizek calls “over-identification,” which exaggerates dominant ideologies as a means of exposition.
Thus, my practice of obliterating texts evolved from an ekphrastic, quasi-artistic play; to a collaborative reflection on layers of meaning-making; and finally to a critical interrogation and outright mockery of ridiculously repressive policies, censored and pushed to its extremes through defacement via erasure.

mid-year accounting 2014

as [mentioned] in my very first post ever for this goddamn year, i intended to note progress, or lack thereof, hence this mid-year report

[discLab] re-published a slightly modified paper, "Intersecting Spaces: A General and The Supremo"in [one], [two], [three] parts (check later, at this very moment, the site seems inaccessible), the essay first appeared in [Salita ng Sandata]; "Pag-ibig ang Pulad ng mga Ulat", in [Transfiksyon: Mga Kathang In-transit]; and "Mikrokosmo" in [Like/Unlike: Kwentong Facebook Status at Politika ng Agam-agam]; article "Fortun, Forensics and the Yolanda Aftermath: Recovery, Storage, System Restore, Repeat" in UP Forum, and "Indigenous Research: Settle to Unsettle, Learn to Unlearn," forthcoming, same publication, will be out there in a week or two. six year taxabbatical apparently appeared as apparition in the slate 2014 planner. also, more [salungguhit]. also, cover image, poems and translations, [Pingkian] Journal for Emancipatory and Anti-imperialist Education, volume 2 number 2. and, last but not the least, was glad to be part of [kritika] 2014, presented a paper about Gerry Alanguilan's Elmer. that's all, repafolks. for now.

september strikes (back [and forth])

*start of message* tried to stay silent all throughout september and sum all things that this accursed month of stressful hell broke loose come october. failed, obviously. terribly failed. i am sober and i prophesy strikes that hopefully would not end as only good starts of sparks that exist for a nanosecond then later cease to be. speaking of such, two strikes of matches after the cut

1) a draft abstract for the boni 150 conference of [contend] this coming thursday. paper tentatively titled "Bonifacio and General China: Power, Liberation and ‘Terrorism’ in Orchid"; and 2) "The Fight for Education: Global Upheavals as Rehearsals," the uncut version of "The Fight for Education as Dress Rehearsal" which was published way back 2011 in UP Forum. the latter a lengthy celebration, the former a brief sigh of critique. i share these things in anticipation of the aforesaid vision of strikes. *end of message*

unsullied midyear harvest report, update, etc

unsolicited, unsullied. anyway, first, dog piss at the UP Forum issue re: territory:

hiatus over. in addition to the carcosite's not-so-updated [publication page], here's another round of shameless plugs of some apparitions. three publications: 1) poem "Minanikang Makina" in Querida: An Anthology, published by Anvil; 2) poem "Tungkol sa Kawalaan*" in IYAS: An Anthology (2001-2010), published by the University of St. La Salle; and 3) poems "Minanikang Makina**," "M for Movement," "May Bagyo, Walang Pasok" and prose poem "An Exercise in Understanding 'Lachrymology'" in The Literary Apprentice, published by UP Writers' Club. tis midyear, and i have not sown enough to reap whatever i deem is enough. but hey, no highs without lows. so, tis fine.

the iyas antho launch

and it has been three years since the workshop. i'd like to believe i've inevitably changed a lot, like the times constantly a-changin' as bob dylan sings to the ends of time and space. [blog entry] about the 10th iyas creative writing workshop is almost three years old. Had lunch with co-fellow S yesterday wednesday and hope to have dinner w L tomorrow later. time lag. watever that means. anyway. i still wish i could travel to that particular point in my time-space quasi-reality, else fly to bacolod when the light breaks the night sky; i'd have to cut the crap of nostalgia tripping here and append the invite:
