Excerpt from the draft of "The Composition of the Swinate"

Article VI, Section 2 of the Constytution provides:

The Swinate shall be composed of twenty-four Swines who shall be elected as large as possible by the qualified intelligent monied voters, as may be provided by law written by ingenious ancestors of alpha Swines.

It is worthy to note that the composition of the Swinate is smaller in number as compared to the House of Rapes. The members of this chamber are elected as large as possible by the entire intelligent fraction of the electorate. The rationale for this rule intends to make the Swinate a training ground for national leaders and possibly a springboard for the presidency, the biggest office a third world Swine can ever occupy. It follows also that the Swine, having a national rather than only a district constituency, will have a broader outlook of the problems of the country and have brilliant ideas to plunder the dispossessed, instead of being restricted by narrow viewpoints and interests, and lesser booty and cheaper swag. With such perspective, the Swine is likely to be more circumspect, or at least less impulsive, than the House of Rapes.

Qualifications to Become Swines

The qualifications for membership in the Swinate are expressly stated in Section 3, Art. VI of the Constytution as follows:

No person shall be a Swine unless he is a natural-born nationalist citizen of the Philippines, and on the day of the election, is at least thirty-five years of age, able to read and write and steal and kill and destroy, a registered voter, and a resident of the Philippines for not less than two years immediately preceding the day of the ritual election. Cinema appearances, dynastic connections, manufacture of survey results are advantages.

It is worthy to note that the age is fixed at 35 and must be possessed on the day of the elections, that is, when the polls are opened and the votes cast, and not on the day of the proclamation of the winners by the board of canvassers. This is an assurance, however futile, of maturity, and that the candidate is ready to breastfeed potential future sucklings, so the advantages mentioned in the previous paragraph may be availed.

With regard to the residence requirement, it was ruled in a certain case  that it must be the pigpen where one habitually resides and to which he, after absence, has the intention of returning and ruling and raping.

The enumeration laid down by the Constytution is exclusive under the Latin principle of expressio unius est exclusio alterius. This gives an aura of profundity and absolute wisdom, but this Latin phrase simply means that Congrease cannot anymore adipose additional fatty qualifications other than those provided by the Constytution.

september strikes (back [and forth])

*start of message* tried to stay silent all throughout september and sum all things that this accursed month of stressful hell broke loose come october. failed, obviously. terribly failed. i am sober and i prophesy strikes that hopefully would not end as only good starts of sparks that exist for a nanosecond then later cease to be. speaking of such, two strikes of matches after the cut

1) a draft abstract for the boni 150 conference of [contend] this coming thursday. paper tentatively titled "Bonifacio and General China: Power, Liberation and ‘Terrorism’ in Orchid"; and 2) "The Fight for Education: Global Upheavals as Rehearsals," the uncut version of "The Fight for Education as Dress Rehearsal" which was published way back 2011 in UP Forum. the latter a lengthy celebration, the former a brief sigh of critique. i share these things in anticipation of the aforesaid vision of strikes. *end of message*

gave you coupla reasons

(this is an addition to the close-reading list hosted herein. among the texts read / temporarily concluded / openly ended are the [omaca-an] series, the [crocodile] series, the [crab] and now, the [pink], which is one-shot like the crab. thanks D and H for granting the permission [?] to post our exchanges of reasoning. we tackled the words to an allegedly popular song via personal message, unlike the crab discussion which was posted as status message and the spontaneous discussion proceeded, free-for-all, at the comments section. we wanted pink for ourselves so-- after the cut, we discuss but before that, let me just say that the suggestion for discussing-- on second thought, i neither want to explain nor apologize for anything, so w/o further ado:)

calvino's chuang-tzu's crab

the illustration is an approximation, or perhaps a rip-off, of the most perfect crab, as created by calvino's story's Chuang-tzu with one stroke. after the cut, dennis, hani and i tried to break the crab, the artist who created the crab and the writer who created the artist who created the crab, etc etc (btw, i have a similar issue to address, but i'd rather have it addressed visually, since the issue that bothered me for a couple of weeks lies in the visual realm).

"Among Chuang-tzu's many skills, he was an expert draftsman. The king asked him to draw a crab. Chuang-tzu replied that he needed five years, a country house, and twelve servants. Five years later the drawing was still not begun. 'I need another five years,' said Chuang-tzu. The king granted them. At the end of these ten years, Chuang-tzu took up his brush and, in an instant, with a single stroke, he drew a crab, the most perfect crab ever seen." —Italo Calvino on "Quickness," from Six Memos for the Next Millennium

unsullied midyear harvest report, update, etc

unsolicited, unsullied. anyway, first, dog piss at the UP Forum issue re: territory:

hiatus over. in addition to the carcosite's not-so-updated [publication page], here's another round of shameless plugs of some apparitions. three publications: 1) poem "Minanikang Makina" in Querida: An Anthology, published by Anvil; 2) poem "Tungkol sa Kawalaan*" in IYAS: An Anthology (2001-2010), published by the University of St. La Salle; and 3) poems "Minanikang Makina**," "M for Movement," "May Bagyo, Walang Pasok" and prose poem "An Exercise in Understanding 'Lachrymology'" in The Literary Apprentice, published by UP Writers' Club. tis midyear, and i have not sown enough to reap whatever i deem is enough. but hey, no highs without lows. so, tis fine.

hiatus? hiatus. wail.

this is a notice of hiatus. from blogging. from social media. though i've done this fvck of a declaration a number of times. at least a month. i'll try to shut the fvck up for at least a month, and shut myself inside my head of a room and get things over w. if the gods are w me, i will pull this off at the end of 2013:

meanwhile, give me a month or two (or less? i hope) and i shall release two things: the [second pseud] and the [gastro zine]. that is all. i thank you. that's not all. there's more. btw, you are there in the image. that is where i am, too. that is where we all are, unless we are that holy bull, or coopted into that fvck. belated, ginsberg. i think that's it is all for now. sem starts. life ends. for the nth time.

scale souvenir: a parting gift

watched tarantino's django unchained, and this parting isn't like that of dr. king schultz's farewell to calvin candie that went "normally i would say 'auf wiedersehen,' but since what 'auf wiedersehen' actually means is ''till I see you again,' and since I never wish to see you again, to you, sir, I say goodbye." signing off w his fifth (but probably not the final) croc annote [JEWELER], dennis discussed how simoun failed and how paths might once again cross as another cayman lurks in Noli.

and like a proud mother i sign off with the postscript of the conceived child, as prophesied in JEWELER. i will show you a glimpse of a fraction of its limb so pardon this shameless plug that immediately follows yesterday's [shameless plug], and let me tell you that [pseudocuments volume two: files & facts & figures] is in the works, the semifinal stages of editing, and shall probably be available come june. among its contents is "from the common origin of chainsaws and crocodiles, and other life-and-death matters" with the first section "how to escape the buzzgator death roll: a gift." i leave you w a b.s. of a p.s., a sneek peak of that gift, and i hope you stay safe and away from whatever devil crocs you would rather not face because they are y/our sins.

gator as guilt incarnate

in the latest annote [A HIDDEN WORSHIP] at tekstong bopis, dennis mentioned the possibility of the crocodile being "the unconverted native, the wild and disobedient," something "re-purposed by the dominant power as an emblem of terror." this is something i'll try to explore, but first, a short komix:

the mother of crocodiles

re-read, re-view: [OPEN SEASON] recaps the first four chapters of El Fili, showing us the waters where crocs move about; [crocs across, beyond pages] follows, pulling us perhaps to and fro our arkham asylums; [GROUNDS FOR SPORT] opens the table for competition among stories, story tellers and the involved hocus-pcos (this entry was posted while the ritual, wherein people cast their blessings to democracy, takes place; reptilian fvckers olympics, w the usual 'every vote counts' as punchline; their game, their rules; we are but mere spectators so the democratic practice maintains whatever legitimacy it claims to have, w the assumed mandate blessed by the populace; indeed, "The larger the crocodile, the greater the glory of St. Nicholas."); [WORD MAGICKS] probes into the probable sources of power of fr. salvi: story and stone, hence the inquiry: "What are the implications of turning the devil itself into stone?" story and stone. let me hit my head w the latter.

obliterate something of value, and you make a name for, even a legend of, yourself, the hero. titles, like "dragonslayer," for instance. now, once you own something of value, that is another, well, story. more of an honorific than a title, "mother of dragons,"  imho, has a better ring to it than "dragonslayer." to obliterate or to own a crocodile is the question. fr. salvi opted for both, as expounded in WORD MAGICKS; but let me focus on owning:

two days prior the elections; thus this second installment to this series. the first being [OPEN SEASON: The Crocodiles of El Fili] up at the tekstong bopis blog, where a backgrounder of this attempt to dive deeper into the rivers, actually and figuratively maybe, of rizal's El Filibusterismo is provided by dennis. he discussed how simoun the jeweler "traverses the strata" of the upper (chapter 1) and the lower (chapter 2) deck of steamship tabo. indeed, "excesses from above result in suffering below, acquiescence or struggle from below stabilizes or destabilizes the powers above."

Upang maari kang umupo riyan. Nababato ka ba sa ganitong mga kwento?
Mabuti pa, huwag mong kalimutang may ibang naunang umupo sa iyo
na di-nagtagal ay umupo sa mga tao. Manatiling taas-noo!

Beyond the Bark: Reexamining our Roots

(since the university of the philippines system website seems to be under some sorta state of recovery [tho the issuu account is well and healthy, i guess], i am sharing my article [may kaunting edit lang sa notes] as published in the july-august issue of u.p. forum. in commemoration of macliing dulag, here it is.)

There is a thin line—a letter—between “indigene” and “indigence.” Though their meanings and their Latin roots differ—the former from indigena1 and the latter from indigentia2—both describe indigenous peoples (IPs). In an interview, Dr. Nestor Castro, UP Department of Anthropology chair, quoted Conrad Kottak3 and said that IPs refer to “the original inhabitants or particular territories; often the descendants of tribespeople who live on as culturally distinct colonized peoples, many of whom aspire political autonomy.”

Their right to self-determination, however,  will not be served on a silver platter, more so, a golden one. Despite being guardians of domains blessed with gold, the indigene’s wealth is being looted, making them indigent. No matter how the “civilized” and the “outsiders” romanticize IPs as “rich in culture,” IPs live impoverished lives because of eco-political “developments” that are rather destructive to than cooperative with the environment. Though sources differ regarding Philippines’s ranking4 in terms of gold deposits, our country’s being gold-rich is reflected in folk epics, as bulawan (gold) and is often attributed to matters considered good—which shall not be mistaken as materialistic in the capitalist sense.5

Beyond the indigene’s identities are their communities—their stories, cultures and economies. But because of the images that dominant faction of the “civilized” paint, the IPs and their way of life are misunderstood; or worse, reduced as objects fit for museums and coffeetable books. Instead of heeding the call of the tabusaw6, most of us fall for the myths of how fantastic “developments” are authored by owners and operators of giant machines that excavate mines and construct dams—and displace IP communities.

Universal Declaration of Armchair Rights

in line with the barbaric torch burning of chairs c/o Polytechnic University of the Philippines students, please be enlightened by the document attached herein and remember that armchairs also have their rights. attached is the Declaration of all declarations, unearthed from a very reliable archive by yours truly. transcribed this document earlier, publicized it today, 19th of March. hesitated, but here it is anyway, for your pleasure or pain or whatever purpose it may serve.
----------
Universal Declaration of Armchair Rights

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the wooden armchair family (or relative benches and similar seats) is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for armchair rights have resulted in barbarous acts such as torch burning which have outraged the conscience of couches and chairs and their advocates, and the advent of a world in which armchair beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common seat,

Whereas it is essential, if the armchair is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that armchair rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between benches,

Whereas all kinds and types under the United Furniture Cartel have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental armchair rights, in the dignity and worth of the armchair person and soul and in the equal rights of chairs and stools and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Furniture Cartel, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of armchair rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF ARMCHAIR RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all chairs and all seats, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the seats of Member States themselves and among the stools of territories under their jurisdiction.

**you may propose amendments or revisions, because we are democratic and all**

Article 1. All armchair beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

as i've mentioned, i'll be releasing a komix collection (hopefully) this weekend. though you may download it for free, you may also pre-order but we'll have to communicate / negotiate on the terms and conditions. so, yes, it shall be more hassle-free to just do away w the soft copy, but, of course, the print edition will be sorta special w bonus stuff. also, i updated my publications / carcasses section, you may want to look at it, and you may pre-order other titles herein, but, again, we'll have to communicate:

C | harapin ang hinagap: mga prosa, (2012). A | Ang Sandatahang Banga (O Kung Bakit Maraming Banga sa Elbi), Additional Photos by Grekka Sarmiento and Jonallin Yang, (2011). R | Ang Engkwentro sa Palma Bridge ng mga Batang Pinalaya(s) sa Sinapupunan, (2007, Reprinted 2009). C | Lihim ng mga Lespu, Illus. by Ayesha Sarapuddin, (2010). forthcoming postulait++

this is a cover study of "postulait," an upcoming silent komix that i hope to finish at the soonest time possible.

i'll upload previews or samples soon, as i wouldn't be using this style in the inside pages. also, i will be putting up a komix collection that will include shorts that appeared elsewhere. it will include all my QBCCC entries. it will be available as a free download, though print editions may be pre-ordered w, i dont know, perks of some sort. and, i think the QBCCC peeps are working on a website and it shall be up soon. end of message.

omaca-an intermission

here's an intermission or maybe a spin-off of some sort after reading in damiana E's intro [sa MYTHS, i think?] something that stated how leeches came to be. i think she referenced adeva as the source of the data, but i haven't read the actual story, so, here is what came up:

here are the links to the previous drawings: [re-viewing] [othering] [teasing] and links to the annotes from tekstong bopis: [prelude] to annotations; [-1-] CANNIBAL GIANTS; [-2-] KAINGIN VS THE WILD;" [-3-] TWO APPROACHES; [-4-] THE FALL OF RAJAH SOLAIMAN; and [there's a fifth one coming,  i'll just update this post by then].  [-5-] THE HAUNTED RING [updated: 02082013].

uhm, five inquiries?

am i right? the translation of inquiry is pagbubulatlat or pagsisiyasat (ang conyo lang ng pagtatanong e 'no, kainis)? the inquirer is doing it but... i know you know where this 'but' would lead, so i'm leaving it up to your-- anyway, today, my fifth drawing is up at bulatlat.com's salungguhit. below are details (note that in this post, have retained the reso [?] and the colours [?] of my original submission/s) of the illustrations: from left to right, top to bottom, here are the questions/ titles: 1.) Remember?; 2.) Super body?; 3.) Tragedy?; 4.) Unarmed?; and 5.) Guarding what?; (on a not-so-related personal note na may kinalaman kay maria, lesson learnt nitong huling mga araw na di mo malaman kung ano gustong mangyari: huwag magtatanong kung hindi pa handa sa [mga posibleng / kawalan ng] tugon;)

re-viewing omaca-an

as mentioned in the [previous post], i thought of 'correcting' my illustration of the omaca-an. but, after talking w dennis of [tekstong bopis], i also think that maybe there is no 'wrong' illustration of the omaca-an. so, this isn't a correction, but rather another version, one without satyr legs. i might come up w another per/version, but i think we'd have to move on to another narrative [?]. soon [?].

but before doing so, let me link once again the [notes] about how i came up w the image of the omaca-an; and also, the [prelude] and two annotations up at tekstong bopis: [-1-] CANNIBAL GIANTS: First annotation of Eugenio's recounting of Adeva's recounting of Rajah Indarapatra's slaying of Omaca-an not only to avenge his brother but so that Lanao might live to tell the tale; [-2-] KAINGIN VS THE WILD: Second Annotation of "Rajah Indarapatra Slays Omaca-an, A Big Giant;"

omaca-an, bakunawa and other(ing) monstrosities

as mentioned in the previous post, this series of collaborative close- and over- reading of folk narratives intends to explore and to speculate and to investigate the text (and may, in the process, expand and extend the context of the concerned text and interconnect it w other texts, but i'll try my best not to do so). quoting dennis aguinaldo of [tekstong bopis] in his [prelude]: "This coming project, that's what it's all about. Over-reading unheard voices, over-drawing the shadows, a godawful merry clanging. Taking what we can get."
